Let's
Talk about Dodging
There
are four main dodges: Face dodge, Roll dodge, Split dodge and Bull dodge.
Contrary to popular belief there is no "get out of Dodge dodge."
Today we will cover the
Face Dodge. This is probably the easiest dodge to learn and also one of the
most common and effective in games situations.
This move is most effective
when the D man covering you is not playing you tight when you receive a pass.
As he charges out at you, you wind up to take a shot and pull the stick across
your face tucking it to your opposite ear in the box area. (remember to only
wind up. don't throw a fake). You accelerate past the D man for a shot on
net or a pass to a teammate.
Practice this move on
a wall. Place a pylon roughly 10+ yards out from the wall (if you don't have
a pylon-use a book, a bucket, a shoe or a friend with absolutely no life).
Run towards the pylon (notice I didn't say run INTO the pylon) do your fake
wind up, tuck-and-move in front of the pylon. As soon as you pass the pylon
take a shot as quickly as possible while still aiming for a "spot".
Hint 1: For a good shot
fake all you need to do pull your stick back to a shooting position. Then
drop and twist your shoulder. This twist or "twitch" is all you
need to freeze the defender and execute your face dodge.
Hint 2: A proper tuck
is when you move the stick across your body so the top of the head passes
by your chin and neck area. The lower the better. If you can see the shaft
of the stick go past your eyes your tuck is too high.
